COLOMBO: A twenty-member European social service technical mission on
Thursday visited the Southern Province Chief Secretary’s office to
discuss development programmes for the province under UNDP Art Gold Sri
Lanka Programme. The mission had arrived in Sri Lanka on Thursday.
It will visit community development centres, which were built under
UNDP Art Gold Sri Lanka Programme (AGSL), in the next few days during
which they plan to study the progress of their programme with a focus to
reinforce the links between local working groups, donors, partners and
the programme.
Nine Community Development Centres have been constructed in
Ambalangoda, Hikkaduwa, Galle-Gintota, Imaduwa, Weligama, Kekanadura,
Tangalle, Hambanthota and Tissamaharama under UNDP’s AGSL programme.
Sources at the AGSL’s Southern Province Working Group Office said that
steps were being contemplated to set up an emergency unit for Karapitiya
Hospital under the programme.
The programme aims at strengthening the capacity of local authorities
and communities to enhance their role in developing the province,
sources said.
