Exit of MP duo no effect on Govt - Minister Chandrasena

COLOMBO: Although two Government Ex-MPs sat with the Opposition in Parliament, this will not in any way affect the smooth functioning of the adminstration, Nation Building Minister S. M. Chandrasena said yesterday.

He said the Government enjoyed a comfortable majority in the House . Tuesday’s passage of the supplementary votes was evidence for this. The Government won by a 20 vote majority.

Addressing the media at his Ministry, Minister Chandrasena said although two MPs left the government another two members from UNP who held Ministerial posts in the UNP Government is set to join the Government shortly.

Minister Chandrasena said since the President commands Executive power the departure of the two MPs would pose no threat to the stability of the Government. “The Security Forces have achieved a huge victory in liberating the East from the LTTE terrorists.

The Government’s aim is to defeat terrorism and bring an honourable peace acceptable to all communities. Mangala Samaraweera held two important Ministerial posts in the UPFA Government but he couldn’t survive in it.

Minister Chandrasena said most of the members of the UPFA Government have come from villages including the President and himself, so they know the fundamental problems faced by the innocent rural folk who are firmly behind the Government.

No Government will go for a General Election when it has a Parliamentary majority.
