Top UN Human Rights post for Dayan Jayatilleke
SWITZERLAND: Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the UN
Office in Geneva, Ambassador Dayan Jayatilleke was unanimously elected
as the Vice President of the UN Human Rights Council yesterday.
The Asian Group in the Council unanimously endorsed Ambassador
Jayatilleka as its representative to the new Bureau of the HRC.
Sri Lanka is a founding member of the new HRC, which is a subsidiary
body of the United Nations General Assembly.
Currently Sri Lanka is the Coordinator of the Asian Group.
Ambassador Doru Romulus Costea of Romania was elected as President of
the new Council.
Uruguay, Djibouti and the Netherlands were also elected as other Vice
Presidents of the Council, representing Latin America , Africa and
Western Europe respectively in the Bureau.
Last week, Ambassador Jayatilleka was elected as Chairman of the
Governing Body of the ILO for 2007-2008. He replaced Mr. Mdladlana,
Minister of Labour of the Republic of South Africa, who served as
Governing Body Chairman during the 2006-07 Session.
The Governing Body is the executive council of the ILO and meets
three times annually in Geneva. |
