Bomb explodes near electricity tower

COLOMBO: A bomb weighing 500 grams went off near a high power
extension tower which was supplying electricity from Kelanitissa to
Biyagama in Urugodawatte yesterday morning.
The tower was located a few metres away from the Urugodawatte railway
crossing along the Colombo-Avissawella road.
Five suspects were questioned following the incident.
According to acting police spokesman Senior DIG N.K. Ilangakoon this
attempt by the LTTE failed to cause any mayhem the area.
The DIG said the high extension tower was slightly damaged and no
harm was caused to life or property.
The explosion left a two feet wide crater at the bottom of the tower.
The Army bomb disposal squads were immediately called to the scene
and the Government Analysts collected fragments from the scene.
Five persons including two security guards were questioned in this
connection. The bomb went off inside the High Security Zone. |
