Trincomalee development expedited

TRINCOMALEE: Several ministers and Government officials toured Trincomalee on Saturday, supervising the development projects and finding ways and means of expediting the development programmes.

They visited several key points in the district on President Mahinda Rajapaksa's directive.

A supermarket, a new bus stand and Stage One of the 66 Km roadway joining Sampur and Pallikudiththi, a connecting link for several economic centres, are nearing completion. The groundwork covering the entire length of the roadway and the drainage system have also now been completed.

Approximately 6,990 people resettled from Kadakarachchinai, Sampur East, Sampur West, Kunanathivu and Navarathnapuram will be able to enhance their living standard through this Trade Zone.

Resettlement in nine Grama Niladhari Division within the Ichchalampattu Divisional Secretaries Divisions has been completed. Arrangements have been made resettle 400 families in Pu Nagar, Verugal, Moththuarachchi and Pullikudittu. The Government intends to increase the number of families resettled, up to 5000 by July.

The Government has taken precautious to ascertain that the area is free of landmines and other explosive devices, before resettlement.

Repair to roadways neighbouring Trincomalee and the Ella-Kantalai highway too have been completed with power supply. Repairs to the Kantale hospital alone, had cost the Government Rs. 170 million.

More doctors will be appointed to hospitals in the District. Material srequired for schools in resettled areas are being provided at the moment.

The first consignment of 4000 desks and chairs and 10,000 school uniforms were sent to the area last week.

It was decided that cooperative stores should be opened so that the public would be able to purchase their consumer goods without any difficulty and scarcity.

Ministers Rishard Baduideen, Rohana Dissanayaka and Susantha Punchi Nilame, Eastern Province Governor Mohan Wijewickrema, North Central Province Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake, Trincomalee Government Agent, Divisional Secretaries and Government officers and political party representatives participated.
