Independence Square rehabilitation project begins

COLOMBO: The foot path between Independence Square and the
planetarium named as Janaraja Sakmana will be handed over at a ceremony
by Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake today at 8.30 am as part of
the ceremony to mark the 35th Republic day. Urban Development Minister
Rohana Dissanayake will also participate.
The Urban development Authority on the advice of Urban development
and Sacred Area Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardane will complete
the independence square development project in five stages.
Gregory's Road, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Maitland Crescent, Wijerama
Mawatha and Prof. Stanley Wijesundara Mawatha have been identified as
the perimeter of the Independence Square development project.
Under the second stage it is envisaged to rehabilitate the
Independence Building and its environment, rename the road from
Bauddhaloka Mawatha to Independence Square as the Sanskruthika Mawatha
and develop the approach road to Independence Square.
