Lanka attracts Rs. 191 billion worth investments

COLOMBO: The Government has been able to attract Rs. 191 billion worth of total investments by approving the establishment of 251 local and foreign investment projects in Sri Lanka during the period of January to May 18, Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama said.

He said this would vastly develop the national economy while creating over 44,384 new job opportunities. Among the new projects are companies dealing in Information Technology, Electricity, Housing, Ready Made Garment manufacturing and its related services, Rubber related projects, Hotel Projects, Domestic Equipment, Food Manufacturing and Electrical Equipment.

The Government has given approval to commence 23 projects in January which amount to Rs.9,429 million. It is expected to create over 3,308 new job opportunities.

"We have approved 22 projects on February and 30 projects in March. The total investment of Rs 14 billion has been achieved through this while creating the over 6856 jobs opportunities.

"Approval has been given for the 117 projects in April and it is the highest rank. The total investment is Rs. 104 billion while over 24,596 employment opportunities are generated. We have approved 59 projects till May 18 attracting Rs. 60 billion worth of investments. Over 9,624 jobs are expected to be created this month," Minister said.

He said the Government is keen on approving investment projects expecting speedy development in the country. It also uplifts the peoples livelihood by eradiating unemployment and increasing the flowing of the foreign exchange to the country.
