Rs. 5,000 m ADB aid for local bodies

COLOMBO: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has allocated Rs. 5,000 million for the development of infrastructure needs and other services of Local Bodies, Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon said.

He was speaking at a national level workshop on income generation of local authorities and livelihood development at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute yesterday.

Funds will be granted as a loan to every Local Government Institution for their own income generation projects.

It will be released through the Local Loan and Development Fund after evaluating their suitability, Tennakoon said.

The Minister appealed to Heads of Local Bodies not to misuse public money.

Local Heads must think wisely and work hardly to defeat financial challenges of their council, Tennakoon added.

A Cabinet paper will be forwarded shortly to get approval for duty free vehicles for all Local Government Heads, he said. Ministry Secretary Cashion Herath said vacancies in Local Government Services will be filled soon.

Twenty-four tractors and trailers were distributed among 17 Heads of Local Bodies by the Minister.
