Father, two sons hacked to death

MATARA: An elderly father and his two sons were hacked to death over a family dispute near their house in Diyalape, Akuressa on Monday night. Two others also sustained injuries in the incident, police said.

According to DIG Southern Range Jayantha Gamage the suspects were relatives of the victims and the motive was a family dispute. The incident had occurred at around 9.30 p.m.

The parties lived approximately 500 metres away from each other in Diyalape. The victims have been identified as H.Albert (65), S.Chaminda (35) and H.Upali (30).

The DIG said the family dispute has began one and half year ago when C. Sujeewa (12) from the family of the alleged assailants had been taken away without their knowledge and made to work as labourer in a boutique at Moratuwa by the other party.

"Sujeewa's family lodged a complaint at the police saying that H.Upali had abducted their son", he added.

Police arrested Upali following the statement from Sujeewa and the case was pending at the Magistrate's Court.

"Since then there were many disputes and complaints were made to the police station in Akuressa by both families," DIG Gamage said.

On Monday evening, Chaminda and Upali were returning after working at their paddy field. On their way home, they had to pass the home of their rivals. "An argument between two families had turned violent and Albert who heard the argument had rushed to the scene", the DIG added.

When Albert arrived the scene, he was assaulted by the other party and a clash erupted leading to the hacking of the father and his two sons. Two other persons from the rival family were also injured in the incident while two were arrested, DIG Gamage said.

Two special police teams had been deployed to conduct a full investigation into the incident.
