Ex-CEB officer arrested for corruption

COLOMBO: The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery
or Corruption yesterday arrested Velupillai Rajendran a former
Additional General Manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board on a
complaint lodged against him regarding an alleged act of corruption at
the CEB.
He was later granted bail by Colombo Chief Magistrate Kusala Sarojini
Weerawardena after the Investigating Officers produced him before the
Magistrate, Director Investigations of the Bribery Commission SSP
Neville Guruge said.
The arrest was made following a complaint received by the Commission
in 2004 on an alleged act of corruption with regard to the selling of
unserviceable goods of the CEB at the Trincomalee Area office, he added.
According to the complaint, the former AGM in charge of Eastern
Province had sold these unserviceable goods to a fake company at Rs. 4.5
million without following the stipulated tender procedure of the CEB.
He was released on Rs. 25,000 cash bail and bound by two sureties in
a sum of Rs. 150,000 each.
The Magistrate also ordered him to surrender his passport to Court
and also to report to the Bribery Commission on the last Sunday of each
month. |
