COLOMBO: The Government has announced the maximum wholesale prices of
10 essential commodities for this month with the aim of providing
greater relief for consumers.
Whole sale prices of dhal, white sugar, red onion, big onion, sprats,
green grams, kadala, dried chilies, potatoes, broiler chicken and canned
fish have been gazetted for this month, Trade, Marketing Development,
Co-operative and Consumer Services Minister Banduala Gunawardana said.
The major target of this programme is to provide essential
commodities at fair prices providing further relief to ordinary people.
The Price Stability Agreement reached with the Essential Food
Commodities Importers and Traders Association in Pettah is being
continued with this objective.
“We have imposed duties on potatoes, big onions, red onions and sugar
which are produced here. It will protect the farmers. We expect to
promote the cooperatives network in Sri Lanka for the proper
distribution of essential commodities. This would vastly benefit for
consumers.”
He said the Government will streamline the co-op sector to attract
more customers to the 11,000 cooperatives islandwide including those in
the North and East. |
