Delmege Group win 'A' division title

BASKETBALL: Delmege Group defeated Sampath Bank by 87 points to 79 points in the Mercantile Super League men's basketball tournament 'A' division final worked off at the Otter Aquatic Club courts.

The winners took a 40-31 lead at half time with P. Pushpakumara (21), R. Randima (14) and S. Perera (25) leading the way. M. Abeysekera (32), C. Danawansa (14) and A. Vishvanath (14) figured in a vain attempt for Sampath Bank. Prageeth Pushpakumara of Delmege was named most outstanding player.

Meanwhile Nations Trust Bank edged out Ranawana and Company by 79 points to 78 points in the 'B' division tournament final. The winners led 40-22 at half time.

M. Jayaratne (10), R. Yoosuf (31) and C. Kaluwardena (22) did the bulk of the scoring for Nations Trust Bank while D. Perera (19) and S. Dushantha (23) excelled for Ranawana and Company. Manjula Jayaratne of Nations Trust Bank was picked as the most outstanding player in the 'B' division tournament.

Hayley Group clinched the 'C' division title when they outplayed David Pieris Motor Company Limited 'B' team by 89 points to 63 points in the final. The winners led 47-25 at half time.

R. Ganewatte (27), Z. Gazalli (19) and C. Thantirige (11) were outstanding for Hayleys Group while N. Kumarasinghe (17) and B. Lakmal (16) did the scoring for David Pieris Motor Company Limited. Chatura Thantirige of Hayleys Group was named most outstanding player in the 'C' division tournament.

Commercial Bank had the better of SriLankan Airlines 'B' team by 70 points to 32 points in the 'D' division tournament final. The winners led 42-11 at half time. K. Perera (10), A. Rukmal (11) and N. Suwaris (13) did the bulk of the scoring for Commercial Bank while A. Sellar (14) and U. Ratnasiri (11) excelled for SriLankan Airlines. Anthony Seller of SriLankan Airlines was named most outstanding player in the 'D' division tournament.

Meanwhile in the women's tournament final Seylan Bank defeated Hatton National Bank by 70 points to 32 points after leading 40-11 at half time. P. Fernando (10), D. Wijesinghe (30) and I. Sandamali (11) were outstanding for Seylan Bank while R. Jayawickrema (10) and K. de Silva (15) did the scoring for Hatton National Bank.

Kumarani de Silva of Hatton National Bank was picked as the most outstanding player of the women's tournament. The tournament was organised and conducted by the Mercantile Services Basketball Association and sponsored by Delmege Group.
