Thunder storms threaten to disrupt games in Guyana
Elmo Rodrigopulle from Guyana, Tuesday
WORLD CUP: Sudden thunderstorms broke out here in Guyana and
threatens to disrupt the Super Eight series here at the Providence
Stadium.
The teams contest the Super Eight here and endeavouring to move on
are Sri Lanka, Australia, South Africa, England, West Indies, Ireland,
New Zealand and Bangladesh. According to those in the know here, it does
not rain at this time of the year and they described it as freak
weather.
The bad news is that thunderstorms are forecast for the next eight
days. Temperatures in Guyana's capital Georgetown will be around 87 F
into the middle of next week and a daily downpour is expected.
Sri Lanka will not be unduly worried because they already have two
points after winning their three matches in the Group stage.
All the teams had to practice indoors. It is likely that the teams
will have to come out the rest days to obtain results.
South Africa who play Sri Lanka today will have an extra incentive to
go for victory. If they manage a win over Sri Lanka it would allow them
to hold on to their number one status and land them a US dollars 175,000
windfall.
South Africa will have to secure the top spot in the ICC one-day
rankings by April 1 to receive the cash award.
If Australia defeats West Indies and Bangladesh on Saturday, then
Ricky Ponting's men could regain the top spot. For that to happen then
South Africa must lose to Sri Lanka. |
