Outlaw the LTTE

We hope the world community would draw the correct inferences from the dastardly LTTE mortar attack in Batticaloa at the time of the arrival there of a delegation including the US and Italian ambassadors and Disaster Management and Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe.

While it is a relief that no lives were lost, although scores were injured, it is with the utmost vehemence that we condemn this attack on a party which included both a Cabinet Minister and the representatives of two major, foreign governments, who were under the care of the Lankan State.

What should be understood by this brazen violation of international norms of conduct is that the LTTE would stop at nothing in the pursuit of their evil ends.

Whereas foreign governments and their representatives should be respected and given the utmost protection, such considerations do not enter the demented minds of the Tigers.

The conclusion is inescapable that they do not care in the least for anything which is considered precious and vital by anybody anywhere, leave alone the international community and its institutions.

An attack - physical or otherwise - on the ambassadors of any country or state is considered an attack on the country concerned. This is seen as an inviolable principle in the relations among states. However, for the LTTE, these are matters of absolutely no significance. They would destroy and savage anything to gain their heinous ends.

This is reconfirmation of the view that the LTTE sees nothing as precious and worthy of protection. More significantly, this disturbing episode is proof that the LTTE could never be considered trustworthy.

They are out to destroy anybody or anything in pursuit of their aims and should be treated as such. What should be learnt by the governments of the world is that the LTTE should be absolutely outlawed, marginalised and hunted down.

The world community should collectively carry out this task at hand. Besides, it needs to be considered that the delegation subjected to the attack was on a humanitarian and developmental mission. They were to attend a development parley which was to bring the fruits of material growth to the Batticaloa district.

Apparently, in the perverted reasoning of the Tigers, development to Tamil majority areas is something to be avoided like the plague. If this were not so, they would not have attempted to disrupt the development meeting. Here too we have another example of the mindlessly destructive behaviour of the Tigers and why they need to be outlawed by the world.

They are all out to destroy everything that is considered precious by the world and need to be stopped in their tracks. Besides, they could not care in the least for the community they are vociferously claiming to fight for.

This needs to be understood by the world and the Tamil community. The State is the only source of succour of the Tamil people. The Tigers, on the other hand, are relentlessly working against their interests.

Shades of authoritarianism to the fore in UNP

Now however, having seen the UNP Constitution I can understand the cosy relationship that was built up between Prabhakaran and Wickremesinghe. Unlike in the days of D S Senanayake and his successors as UNP leader, Wickremesinghe is now leader for life of the UNP, in terms of a change he introduced in 1995.

Impressions of the Galle Literary Festival

I detected a note of sadness and nostalgia for the lost Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in Kadirgamar’s contribution. He was, as ever, passionately steadfast in his assertion of the rights of the Tamil citizens of Sri Lanka while underscoring the oneness of all Sri Lankans. Blacker’s stance was opposite to that of Kadirgamar’s.
