WCA - one of the most transparent sports bodies - Gwen Herat

Dissolved: The President of the Women's Cricket Association of Sri Lanka, Gwen Herat said she was happy to have headed the WCA for the last ten years and make it one of the most transparent national sports bodies in the country.

Herat said this on the eve of the WCA being dissolved to make room to place women's cricket in the hands of Sri Lanka Cricket who will be responsible for the game thereafter.

Emotional: An emotional moment for Gwen Herat, President, Women’s Cricket Association of Sri Lanka, after ten years. The WCA will be dissolved by the Ministry of Sports and placed with Sri Lanka Cricket in association with the ICC. Secretary WCA, S.K. Ravindran is seen placing the signature in the presence of the President of constituent clubs of WCA at the auditorium of Moors SC at a special general meeting.

After being responsible for taking part in the World Cups and number of international tours, Herat is ready for the change that will make women's cricket to be in par with the rest of the world.

She summoned the eleven clubs of the WCA at a Special General meeting to obtain their consent while all agreed and supported her move, only one club, Colombo Colts Ladies CC not attending and being a part of this important move.

Herat told the Daily News that this was a requirement by the ICC and which WCA endorsed at the International Women's Cricket conference in Pretoria, South Africa in 2005 where Herat represented Sri Lanka led her country to be placed under the ICC.

She thanked Chandra Munaweera who is in the USA now, for being with her during the difficult days as Secretary of the WCA.

She was a pillar of strength, Herat said. She was also full of praise for Deepthi Gunaratne, the Treasurer whose honesty and dedication made WCA transparent in money matters. I was so relaxed with her and with Vice President, Sirath Kasturiratne whose experience and advice I valued.

"If not for our National Sponsor, SINGER, there would be no women's cricket in the country. Herat paid a glowing tribute to Chairman, Hemaka Amarasuriya for placing his trust in her... "Every single official and all players had very cordial relationship with me." Herat further said "I was able to maintain discipline among players and be strict with them when it warranted.

I am happy that in our first World Cup captain, Vanessa Brown, was a young woman who gave the head start at the first World Cup 1997 and kept the ball rolling for the WCA and placed the country in sixth slot in world ranking.

When we asked whether she quit the game, Herat said she will come back when an elected executive takes control of Sri Lanka Cricket.
