Nihal Jayamanne re-elected BASL President

COLOMBO: Leading civil lawyer, President Counsel Nihal
Jayamanne was re-elected as the President of the Bar Association of Sri
Lanka (BASL) at the elections held at the Colombo Law Library premises
recently.
New BASL President Nihal Jayamanne an old boy of St. Joseph's
College, Colombo is the son of late Senator and Minister of Justice J.
M. Jayamanne. Late Jayamanne was associate of late Prime Minister S. W.
R. D. Bandaranike.
At school Nihal Jayamanne was Senior Prefect and also the President
of the Union Society of the College. He was the President of the Law
College Student's Union in 1989.
The BASL President was appointed to the Board of Air Lanka in 1994.
Jayamanne stressed the need for the cordial relationship between the
Bench and the Bar as it had been for centuries.
BASL President Nihal Jayamanne took oaths, as an Advocate on July 20,
1970 and later was appointed as a Presidents Counsel.
He said that there are more than 500,000 cases awaiting judgement in
the Magistrates' courts and added that lawyers, judges and litigants
need to work together to avoid these delays that are hampering speedy
conclusion of cases. |
