Hat-trick by Mahanama

CRICKET: Salitha Mahanama displaying a commendable effort claimed 5 wickets for 65 including a hat trick which enabled Gurukula College to gain a first innings win over Ananda Sastralaya, Kotte in their inter-school cricket encounter which got under way at Ananda Sasthralaya grounds, Kotte on Wednesday.

Gurukula 206 (Aravinda Ernest 41, R.Maduwantha 22, S. Mahanama 43, M. de Silva 5 for 53, S. Devinda 2 for 41) and 196 for 8 (Thilina Dilan 45, Salitha Mahanama 99, O. Darshana 2 for 61, M. de Silva 4 for 50).

Ananda Sastralaya 193 (T. P. Karunathunga 43, D. Madushan 28, L. Rupawansa 23, Salitha Mahanama 5 for 65, Rukshan Bandara 3 for 26) and 87 for 5 (T. P. Kulatunga 32, S. Niwanka 2 for 14, T. Dilan 1 for 3).

Thomians in strong position

S. Thomas' College were in a strong position at the end of the first day's play in their inter-school cricket match played against Trinity College, Kandy which began at Mount Lavinia, yesterday.

The Thomians taking the first lease of the wicket scored a modest 175 but hit back to bundle out Trinity for 94 which gave them a 81 run first innings lead. The wreckers of the Trinity innings were Sashrika Pussegolla (3 for 23) and Ruchira de Silva (3 for 22) earlier Wishva Weerawardane top scored for the Thomians with 46.

S. Thomas' College 175 (Wishva Weerawardane 46, R. Nirushan 24, Pathirana 3 for 65, A. Bulanawewa 2 for 22, M. Jaleel 2 for 10) and 6 for no loss.

Trinity College 94 (R. Perera 30, M. N. Mazair 4 for 28, S. Sashrika Pussegolla 3 for 23, L. Ruchira de Silva 3 for 22).

First innings win for Isipatana 'A'

Isipatana College 'A' registered a first innings win over Thurstan College 'A'in their two-day mini battle which concluded at Thurstan College, grounds yesterday.

Danantha de Silva who was adjudged Man of the Match and the best bowler too made a very good contribution for Patana by having a match-bag of 7 for 70. Charith Priyadharshana who was adjudged the best batsmen scored a half century (52) for Thurstan College and was ably helped by I. Masalage (50) who contributed another half century to lift the score.

After Thurstan made 183 Isipatana scored 93 for 7 in their second innings by the close. P. Kalhara (21) and C. Wickramasinghe (22) top scored for Pathana. A. Haneefa claimed 4 for 21 for Thurstan.

Isipatana College 'A' 232 (G. Kalhara 22, I. Ismail 45, S. Kumar 42, D. Gunawardane 34, G. S. Fernando 22, A. Haneefa 3 for 46, H. Chandrasiri 2 for 31, A. Zoysa 2 for 26) and 93 for 7 at close (P. Kalhara 21, C. Wickramasinghe 22, A. Haneefa 4 for 21).

Thurstan College 'A' 183 (Charith Priyadharshana 52, I. Masalage 50, Danantha de Silva 7 for 70).
