Over than 1,000 Malaysian teens may be charged for dodging national
service
MALAYSIA: More than 1,000 Malaysian teenagers may be prosecuted for
skipping compulsory national service, reports said Sunday.
Police said they had completed investigations of 1,307 teenagers who
had dodged national service and were looking into another 3,595 cases.
Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak was quoted by the New Sunday Times
as saying that the Attorney-General's Chambers would assess the 1,307
cases submitted by police and decide those liable for prosecution.
He said teenagers with valid reasons would be let off but those who
willfully refused to attend the three-month training program would be
charged in court.
"Our action is only aimed at those who defy their call-up despite
being healthy and not having personal problems such as having to care
for an elderly mother," he said in the report.
"These people need to face the reality that they broke the law."
