Govt. Services win Dilan Perera Independence Trophy

Government Service XI carried away the “Dilan Perera Independence Trophy” when they beat the Combined Schools by 3 goals to 1 at finals played at the Vincent Dias Stadium in Badulla on Sunday.

Six teams participated at this tournament organized by the Veterans Sports Club in conjunction with the District Secretary.

In the semifinals Combined Schools beat the Rest on a penalty shoot out while the Government Services XI beat the Nationalised Services by 3 goals to 1.

The final Government Services eleven went into the lead when M. Rifkhan scored a beautiful goal from the mid field. Just before the first half M. Rafeek added one more goal to give the winners a 2 - 0 lead at the short whistle.

On changing ends the Combined Schools played with determination and reduced the lead through Ruwan Sanjeew. A last minute effort to equalize the game was fruitless against the Government Services’ custodian S. Gajanayake who did a grand job between the posts.

The Justice Minister Dilan Perera was the chief guest and distributed the awards.
