HOCKEY: Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy became the first winners
of the All Island Schools Girls under-19 Hockey Tournament for Sisil
Shield when they scored a thrilling 1-0 win over Visakha Vidaylaya
Colombo in the finals of the tournament organised by the Sri Lanka
Schools Hockey Association and worked off at the Nandimithra Hockey
Stadium in Matale on Sunday evening.
At half time there was no scoring. It was a dour struggle for
supremacy as both teams appeared to be well balanced and equal in
strength. In the past it has been often found that the battle between
these two leading schools produced sparkling hockey and often sparks
flew.
But overall it was found a Synthesis of speed, skill and system stood
pronounced in Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya's front line work outs with
Yamuna Wijesuriya and Chathurika Wijesuriya being outstanding other hand
the Visakaha stickers displayed thrust and stick work to confuse their
opponents defence. It was in this light that a relentless struggle for
supremacy was witness in the enclosure.
In the end it Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya who emerged winners when
late in the second half centre half Chathurika Wijesuriya struck gold
with a brilliant goal which brought her side the win and the Sisil
Trophy.
Indika Jayawardene and Mohamed Hanafi umpired. Marketing Manager of
Singer Sri Lanka (Pvt) Limited Asitha Abeysekera was the Chief Guest
with Dhammika Wijesundera Sales Manager of Sisil Fridges as the Guest of
Honour.
