Rs. 200m for national action plan on children

COLOMBO: The Government has allocated Rs.200 million to implement a National Plan of Action (NPA) for children. The Plan will be ready by mid February, Commissioner, Probation and Child Care Services, S. Abeygunawardana said.

He said the Department is in the process of formulating the NPA with the coordination of the provincial departments of Probation and Child Care Services. All provincial departments have already been informed of the NPA and requested to submit their proposals. The NPA will mainly focus on three major criteria. They are developing infrastructure of children's homes, prevention of child exploitation and reunification of children.

Infrastructure of children's homes need to be upgraded to offer better living condition for child inmates. Therefore attention will be paid to upgrade infrastructure facilities in children's homes. The Probation and Child Care Services Department has also paid attention towards prevention of child exploitation, abuse and harassments. Awareness raising will also be done.
