Ceylon Hotels Corporation: 40 years in hospitality industry

GROWTH: The role that the Ceylon Hotels Corporation (CHC), has played in the growth of Sri Lanka's Tourism over the past 40 years, since commencement of business in 1967, is certainly worth of commemoration.

"Now a member of the Gardiner Group, Ceylon Hotels Corporation boasts a diverse collection of 21 hotels,

ROMANTIC: Ella Resthouse

resthouses, resorts and restaurants throughout Sri Lanka, many of which offer an old world charm providing clients with something quintessentially local in the most picturesque and prominent locations, some of which are within minutes to renown historical sites and attractions," says CHC's charming new Director Sales and Marketing Anushka Rovell.

She said that the Ceylon Hotels Corporation's past, present and future is grounded in a commitment to providing quality customer care and service coupled with "good value for money". To the millions of guests who have made any of our properties their 'home away from home' since 1967.

"We commemorate our 40th Anniversary with a variety of unique programs and promotions planned throughout this year which will include the launch of tours to Kandy, Ella Tissamaharama, Polonnaruwa and to begin with there is special room rate promotion," Lovell said.

The foundation of most CHC properties is accredited to the British Rulers of Sri Lanka. Influenced by the British Civil Servants' urgent need for temporary abodes during their extensive travels in remote out posts in colonial Ceylon, many of the properties were designed and built to resemble the style and architecture of old English Inns and Country Homes.

Realizing that tourism was one of the fastest growing industries in the World and identifying the vast potential that existed within the CHC properties, the reigning government in 1967 undertook an extensive development of these properties in order to lure more tourists to visit this resplendent Island.

WORLD FAMOUS: Kitulgala Resthouse

Rovell said that under the vision and direction of the Group Chairman, Sanjive Gardiner and his new team of professionals, further plans are well under way to extensively develop and improve the standards of services and facilities within the CHC properties, which are advantageously located and economically priced to cater to the different market segments that exist amongst local and international tourism.

Ceylon Hotels Corporation's chain falls into three categories according to their location - Pusellawa, Ella, Kotmale, Belihuloya are situated in the central highlands: Weligama Bay Inn situated on the coastline of the South and Tissamaharama, Dambulla, Sigiriya, Habarana, Polonnaruwa and Seruwa are located in the cultural triangle.

Those interested in wide life, will never forget the Tissmaharama resethouse which facilitates mere 30 minute drive to the famous Yala National Park and the Kataragama Shrine.

"The romantic locations of the Grand Ella Motel, Polonnaruwa Resthouse, Kitulgala Resthouse or Belihuloya Resthouse have prompted visitors to name our resthouses as honeymooner's paradise or a hide out for relaxation in exotic surroundings - this is particularly appropriate to Hotel Mihintale," said Consultant Sales and Marketing CHC Shan Wickramaratne.

The colonial building of Ambepussa has become a very popular stopover for visitors enroute to Kandy, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. The architecture of some of the properties, although given a new look, is still in keeping with the old traditions, which Ceylon Hotels Corporation is famous for.

The surroundings of each resthouse and its scenic beauty cannot be over emphasized. You will hear the gushing waters of the river flowing, the chirping sounds of birds and the cool breeze blowing across while you relax at many of the resthouses.

The Kitulgala Resthouse is one such location and has earned its fame from being the setting for the filming of Bridge on the River Kwai".

A host of activities await you amongst the CHC properties - varying from rock climbing to river rafting, nature walks, river bathing, barbecues, cultural and archaeological excursions, boat rides, fishing, jungle safaris, a visit to the Zoo and more.

Ceylon Hotels Corporation will kick off its 40th Anniversary Celebrations, with a stunning offer of a 40 percent discount at any of the Ceylon Hotels Corporation properties for Sri Lankan or Resident Expatriates travelling and staying on weekdays between February 1 to 28.
