11,000 teachers to be recruited

COLOMBO: The Education Ministry will recruit 11,000 teachers to the Teachers' Service this year to provide a quality education for every student and overcome teacher-shortage in difficult provinces.

The Ministry also plans to recruit 4,000 graduates who will be posted to schools closer to their residence.

They should serve a minimum period of eight years in the school they are appointed. Priority will be given to graduates in Science, Information Technology and Languages. The Gazette Notification pertaining to this recruitment will be published within a few days.

The process of selecting prospective candidates for the 3,000 teacher appointments among the College of Education Diplomates is under way while the Gazette Notification for recruitment of 200 teachers (For National and Provincial Schools) for Western Music is due to be published soon. Arrangements are also under way to grant teacher appointments to 148 graduates who have passed the Bachelor of Education.

Interviews are held at provincial level for the recruitment of 3,179 Tamil teachers and 600 Muslim teachers to obliterate the existing teacher shortage at Tamil and Muslim schools. These recruitment will be handled by the Provincial Secretaries and Provincial Public Service Commission.
