Blue Star SC closing on leaders Ratnam SC
Bernard Perera
SOCCER: Blue Star Sports Club managed to hold on to their second
position in the Kit Premier League Soccer Championship Standings when
they trounced high riding Negombo Youth SC on Wednesday at Kalutara
Stadium three goals to two.
This victory by the Kalutara team also assured them of the runners-up
position behind Ratnam SC who has a clear lead with two matches to be
played to collect a maximum of six points. Even two draws in these two
games is sufficient for the leaders to go for the championship title.
Meanwhile Blue Star SC with 34 points from 14 games too are in
contention for the title. If they are to make a leap towards the top
slot they will have to win both matches in hand. Blue Star come out with
two wins and Ratnam failing to win their games will make the difference
at the end with the Kalutara team winning the championship.
The match between Ratnam SC and Negombo Youth which was scheduled for
today has been postponed, and it is likely that this game will kick off
next Wednesday. With only one segment 'A' match scheduled for today
between Saunders SC and Sri Lanka Army there will be no changes effected
to the standing up to-date.
Segment B standing is sure to change this week with New Young SC from
Wennappuwa try thier best to move onto the second position with a
victory over Matara SC. Here the Wennappuwa team is favoured to grab the
most vital three points which also could push them a step forward to the
second slot.
Both teams Jupiters SC and Old Bens SC who occupy the first two
positions in this Segment are in danger as New Young SC will make a
strong bid to be on top. If the team from Wennappuwa makes it to the top
Old Bens will lose their runners-up position and also miss the chance of
moving onto the Segment 'A' for the next season.
Two victories for News Youngs will move to Segment A along with
Jupitors SC from Negombo. Leaders in this Segment will also get the
opportunity of playing in the Champion of Champions trophy along with
three top teams from the Segment 'A'. |
