CRICKET: Paceman Umhar Samsudeen took a four wicket haul and opener Srimantha Wijeratne hit an unbeaten 105 to put St. Peter's College in a commanding position on the opening day of their inter school cricket tournament match against Ananda which began at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

Ananda: 96 (U. Peiris 56, U. Samsudeen 4 for 16, V. Perera 3 for 26, L. Rodrigo 3 for 29).

St. Peter's 277 for 6 (S. Wijeratne 105 n.o, K. Magage 91, M. Samarasekera 28, U. Peiris 3 for 101, M. Gunatilleke 2 for 94).

Sri Lanka youth cap Angelo Mathews produced a fine all round performance as St. Joseph's College took control on the opening day of their inter school cricket tournament match against St. Benedict's College played at Darley Road yesterday.

St. Benedict's: 118 (P. Palihakkara 27, S. Sirimanna 30, A. Mathews 3 for 19, S. Weerasinghe 4 for 20, R. Weerasinghe 2 for 34).

St. Joseph's: 190 for 3 (R. Fernandopulle 46, H. Perera 41, A. Mathews 50 n.o, S. Sirimanna 3 for 71).

Nalanda struggling at 135/5

Nalanda College were struggling at 135 for 5 in reply to S. Thomas' first innings total of 190 runs on the opening day of their inter school cricket tournament match which began at Campbell Place yesterday.

Exchanges were even as a total of 23 wickets fell on the opening day of the inter school cricket tournament match between Wesley College and Trinity College Kandy which began at Campbell Park yesterday.

Trinity: 136 (S. Pathirana 35, N. Perera 38, D. Marasinghe 2 for 18, S. Rupasinghe 2 for 29, T. Nazir 2 for 36, D. Wijesinghe 2 for 35) and 45 for 3.

Thurstan in innings win

Thurstan College routed Maris Stella College Negombo by an innings and 22 runs in their inter school cricket tournament match concluded at Thurstan grounds, yesterday.

Thurstan: 257 for 8 decl.
