Trinco port to be uplifted under Mega Development Programme

Expansion: The mega development proposed for the Trincomalee
area has focused on the Trincomalee habour and the present ship traffic
would increase by almost two folds.
The Trincomalee harbour classified as one of the largest natural
harbours in the world sees over 175 ships anchoring harbour annually.

week said that several new
investments are to be made in the region this year and this would
increase the activities of the Trincomalee Port. "We expect the ship
arrivals to increase to nearly 300 ships per annum soon," he said.
A Trincomalee Special Economic Zone too would be set up in January
and the main objective of the is to create an entrepreneurial spirit by
encouraging long-term investment and to create a new industrial culture
by promoting public and private partnerships.
It will also be a leading provider of port related products and
services to international markets by maximizing the potentials of the
Trincomalee Port and it environs as well as to make the most convenient
location in the far East as a destination of investment.
Government Agent Trincomalee, Maj. Gen T. T. R. De Silva said that
the preliminary programs for the development of the Harbour have been
already done in consultation with Ministry of Ports and Shipping.
In addition the proposed expansion in Trincomalee the President
Mahinda Rajapaksa also attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the
Colombo South harbor expansion project that is a need of the hour for
cargo.

expansion of the Galle harbor, which would cater to the future demand of
the country. |
