'Southern Carlton Super Cross' on Jan. 13-14

MOTOR RACING: The Southern Carlton Super Cross 2006 is scheduled to
be conducted at the newly constructed race track on January 13 and 14,
2007 at Tissamaharama organised by the Tharunya Foundation headed by
Namal Rajapaksa. This meet is also be the first racing event for the
year 2007 sponsored by Finance and Guarantee Company.
The main theme of the event is to raise funds for the proposed
hospital project for the armed services personnel. These details were
disclosed by Yoshitha Rajapaksa at a press briefing held at Waters Edge
Hotel, recently.
Yoshitha Rajapaksa Vice-Chairman of the Tharunya Foundation said the
hospital project is estimated to cost 50 million rupees and all proceeds
from this event is to be utilised for the purpose. He also thanked F & G
Group for the sponsorship for the event. He further added that the
hospital is to be constructed at Anuradhapura.
Mervyn Jayasinghe, Deputy Chairman, F & G Group said it is a
privilege to be associated with Tharunya Foundation which has come out
with a praiseworthy cause. He thanked the Foundation for extending an
invitation to be principal sponsors for the event.
The organisers plan to conduct eighteen events (10 cars and 8
motorcycles) for which they expect all leading drivers and riders to
compete on this day. The categories for these events will be the FIA
classifications which are also accepted by the Sri Lanka Automobile
Sports, the governing body for the sport in the island.
According to organisers they hope to conduct two races each for super
car event 3500 cc and the 1600 cc class. January 13 will see the drivers
and riders have their test runs which also serves as the timing for grid
positioning.
