Life imprisonment for possessing heroin

WELIKADA: A man was charged with possession of 90 grams of heroin was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Welikada High Court Judge Sunil Rajapakse convicted Getape Arachchige Sisira Bandula of Madampitiya Road, Grandpass and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Bandula was taken into custody with a powder containing heroin weighing 238.3 grams in his possession by a group of Police Narcotics Bureau led by Chief Inspector Priyantha Liyanage on June 24, 1999.

The Government Analyst Department reports revealed that the powder contained 91.2 grams of heroin. Bandula was taken into custody by the PNB based on information received from a public informant.

State Counsel Asad Navavi appeared for the prosecution.

It was revealed that seven of the cases that were filed before the High Court due to the raids conducted by CI Priyantha Liyanage of the PNB were completed within this year and all the accused were convicted.
