Relief operations in Trincomalee
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Red Cross Society together with the assistance of
International Red Cross partner organisations has been providing relief
items to those displaced in Trincomalee due to the conflict situation in
the area. Over 3,000 people displaced are now living in nine places in
Kantale.
Based on the rapid needs assessment carried out by the Sri Lanka Red
Cross Society Trincomalee branch some displaced families now in Kantale
area were provided with milk powder, cloth, canned fish, mats, bed
sheets, baby hygiene kits, mosquito nets for children, towels, plastic
buckets and bowls, soap and tooth paste and washing powder.
The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) immediately provided
these displaced families with 800 hygiene kits (soap, washing powder,
razors, bath towels and shampoo), 600 jerry cans and 300 tarpaulins.
Meanwhile, the ICRC is also installing sanitary facilities and
water-distribution systems at Bathiyagama School in Kantale town, where
more than 500 displaced people are sheltered.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
(IFRC) would provide financial, technical and material contribution to
relief operation to alleviate the suffering of people.
