Damayanthi wins Bunka Award

MUSIC: Damayanthi Jayasooriya won this year's Bunka Cultural
Award for music organized by the Japanese Sri Lanka Cultural Fund. The
well known vocalist earlier won the Presidential Award for the best
play-back singer.

Damayanthi improved her skills as a vocalist at the 'Lama Mandapaya'
of the then Radio Ceylon in the late 60s.
Thereafter she sang many songs for films.
Melodious renderings
Her melodious renderings have fascinated the hearts of moviegoers
spanning from the early 80s up to the present day. Aradhana, Vathsala
Akka, Adara Hasuna, Avaragira, Saptha Kanya, Sudu Kalu and Alu Yata Gini
are a few movies in which she reached the audience with her vocal
excellence.
She has taken part in several cultural pageants in the United States
bringing fame for herself and the country.
Playback singer
Apart from being a playback singer for a large number of films,
Damayanthi on her own right has so far released four compact discs
packed with fine vocal renderings.
They are 'Hiruta Muwaven' (1989) 'Aware Pipi' (1997) 'La Sanda Paya'
(2004) and 'Budu Mala Pipuna' (2005) each one of which is popular with
the listeners both young and old.
Of these CDs, La Sanda Paya captured the hearts and imagination of a
wide spectrum of listeners.
Her contribution to the small screen has enlivened many teledramas.
Her songs sung for 'Gehenu Lamai', 'Pulina Prasada', 'Hingana Kolla',
'Mahamera Pamula', 'Sihina Danawwa' and 'Doowili Maliga' remains
memorable even today. |
