Film review:
Ideal for entertainment
Karthiga RUKMANYKANTHAN
CINEMA: Varalaru (History) depicts the story of a father who
sacrifices his life for his children. This masala film long awaited by
the Tamil audience is a come back to the 'Ultimate Star' Ajith Kumar.
The film begins with Ajith's memories rolling back to his past life.
Ajith Kumar has given a triple action performing both the roles of the
father and sons.
The plus points of this film are Ajith's distinction in portraying
the provided characters and the music by A.R. Rahman.
Nevertheless the director K.S. Ravikumar knows the pulse of the
audience and with his great sense of humour, he has entertained them in
all possible ways.
Social work
We see a cheerful Ajith journeying to a village for a social work
with his friends where he falls in love with Asin. The sequences of
scenes that take place in the village are although below standard, they
are quite entertaining.
VARALARU: A scene from the film
|
The movie heats up and moves into the main story where Ajith shows
some peculiar characteristic changes. The suspense of Ajith's
transformation is kept to the maximum to pin the audience to their
seats. The truth is revealed to the audience after the interval.
As noticed in Kanika's debut film 'Five star'she is good for
sensitive characters and is a good dancer who has the ability to give
vivid expressions for classical songs. She plays Ajith's lost wife.
Most of the Tamil film stories are woven with prominence to the hero
or the protagonist and this film is in no exception to this formula. In
the flashback, Ajith plays the role of a professional dancer who
develops feminine movements from his young age.
There is a fashion to give something completely new in at least one
aspect of the film. In Varalaru, Ajith has worked on his feminine
movements to give something spicy. As it is clear that this idea is far
beyond reality, it makes these scenes rather humorous. Yet, Ajith lures
the audience attention towards him.
The film is unsuitable for serious filmgoers who would expect some
convincing plots which are much closer to reality. If one doesn't mind
watching a film without questioning just for entertainment, this is a
recommendable film.
Comedy track
A.R. Rahman scores in his music as usual making almost all the songs
in the film memorable. The specialty of this film is the presence of wit
in all the characters of the film without having to create a separate
comedy track.
Asin has performed fairly well in this film and has given a dazzling
performance in the song 'Kaatrilor varthai'. Kanika who has been given
the role of mentally challenged has performed her part with ease taking
no strain on intricate expressions.
The antagonist Ajith brings out the fury of child whose life is
ruined without parents' guidance.
The pace is kept at the same level without boredom until the end. To
leave the audience with a heavy mind, the director gives an emotional
touch by creating sympathy over the death of dancer Ajith.
Varalaru mostly contains commercial elements and the wrong perception
of the directors to create high budget films with weak and delicate plot
in the name of entertainment is reflected through this film.
Such films could affect the growth of quality films however this is
an example of a commercially successful film. |
