Mercantile women cagers in two convincing wins

BASKETBALL: Zefending Champions Mercantile Basketball Association scored two comfortable victories at the Women's Senior Basketball matches organised by Sri Lanka Basketball Association and sponsored by the People's Bank are played at the University Indoor courts at Peradeniya yesterday.

In the opening match Mercantile Basketball Association beat the strong Colombo District Basketball Association 53-35 after leading 31-19 at the end of the second quarter.

For Mercantile ladies Sanduni Bollegala (15), Dhanusha Wijesinghe (13) and Inoka Sandamali (09) scored for Colombo District Shashikala Romain (09) Manaranjani Jayasinghe (08) contributed.

In the second match Mercantile trounced Sri Lanka Schools 73-25 in a one sided game. At half time Mercantile were in command leading 42-15.

Main scorers for Mercantile were Premila Fernando (15), Kumal Silva (14), Danushka Wijesinghe (11) and Inoka Sandamali (11). For Sri Lanka Schools S. Sulochana (12) and P. Prasadhi (06) scored.

In another match played at Peradeniya Colombo District beat Combined Universities 49-43 after trailing behind 20-25 at half time.

The Combined Universities Ladies were very unlucky to lose this match as they threw away the chances which came their way in the second half.

For Colombo District Solangie Gunawijaya (18) and Shashikala Romain (18) scored. For the Combined Universities Anoma Ratnayake (16) and Thilini Batagoda (12) were the main scorers.
