UNP condemns attack

COLOMBO: The UNP strongly condemned yesterday's LTTE bomb attack in Colombo targeting Defence Secretary's security convoy which injured 14 persons including security personnel and civilians.

The UNP in a release issued under the hand of party media spokesman Gayantha Karunatilleke, said this attack was one among several suicide bomb attacks carried out by the LTTE in recent times in a densely populated area around Temple Trees.

Bomb explosions of this nature in the Capital City will spread anarchy and insecurity throughout the country and its damaging effort on the country's economy and community life cannot be easily assessed. If there is insecurity in the country, the Government should take full responsibility for it, the UNP said.

The steps taken by the Government as a solution to barbaric terrorism and separatism should not be restricted to mere words and the UNP stand is that the Government should implement a practical program in this direction without delay.

The UNP wished to reiterate once more that it is dedicated to provide unconditional support towards a solution acceptable to all parities which would foster community life devoid of fear or suspicion.

While expressing its joy about the Defence Secretary's ability to survive this attack unscathed the UNP wished quick revery to all those injured in the attack, the release added.
