SL schools and Wennappuwa win

HOCKEY: Sri Lanka Schools' Maroon and 'Gold' teams, and Wennappuwa H.A. won their encounters at the Junior Hockey Nationals, which commenced at the Vincent Dias Stadium in Badulla on Thursday.

Only eight teams turned up for the tournament organised by the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation in conjunction with the Uva Hockey Association which is being played under two groups on a league basis. The Sports Minister for Uva Provincial Council Dayaratne Banda declared open the tournament.

In the opening group A Sri Lanka Schools 'Maroons' beat Uva H.A. 2-1 after leading 2-0 at the short whistle. Pubudu Serage and A.A. Dinal Niroshan scored for Schools while M. Irshard scored through a Penalty stroke for Uva.

In another 'A' group Sri Lanka Schools 'Gold' trounced Colombo H.A. 6 goals to 1 after leading 2-0 at half time. In the Group 'B' Wennapuwa H.A. trounced Kandy H.A. 8 goals to 3.
