cannot be limited to a boundary.
This matter is entirely in the hands of the artists themselves. True
art portrays the realities of the society. Thus, one has to be a keen
observer of the society to be a successful artist.

Sinhala cinema, teledrama and theatre was met at his office in Nawinna
to share the views and news of the role his playing in life. Mahendra
Perera is widely known as an actor who can play any role from a romantic
lover to a comedian or a gang leader waiting for action.
Over the years he has easily switched on to characters proving the
extreme talent and born skill for acting. Mahendra said that it was
veteran Arisen Ahubudu who first introduced him to Gamini Fonseka and
later on made him to play the role as "Berty Malli" in Sakwithi Suwaya
back in 1978.
This actor had taken part in many workshops conducted by dramatists
from foreign countries and later on held workshops for the youth to gain

work and time makes him tired and that it was one reason, which made him
to leave the theatre. For Mahendra analysing life itself is been taken
as scientific acting. He also said it is necessary to understand the
chemical reactions which passes through a humans life.
With years of hard work Mahendra still believes in exercise prior to
performing. He said that the more exploring would bring the art of
acting to the motions of joy in life.

Affairs Tissa Karaliyadda was the chief guest while the Secretary,

Religious and Cultural Affairs Shanthi Navukarasan and welcome speech

The Tamil language and Tamil literature have a long history and they
have been nourished and enriched by the literary works of great poets
like Subramania Bharathy, Avaiyar and Thiruvalluvar.
Even the great epics like Ramayana and Maha Bharatha are of timeless
and spaceless in quality. All these great epics have absorbed India's
cultural heritage, made it their own, enriched and given a universal
dimension and significance.
Even when Sri Lanka (Ceylon) underwent a terrible time in the early
part of 18th and 19th centuries on account of Western conquest,
multifaceted in its manifestations and consequences - political,
economical, cultural and religious, people like Anagarika Dharmapala,
Sri La Sri Arumuga Navalar, Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan, Sir Ponnambalam
Arunachchalam, Sir Waitilingam Duraisamy and several others sacrificed
their lives for the revival of Sinhala and Tamil languages and
literature, culture and religions.
Sri La Sri Arumuga Navalar, Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan, Hindu Board
Rajaratnam, Handy Perinpanayakam and several educationists established
Hindu schools and made the people to be proud of their language and
literature.
Besides, Swami Vipulananda who was a great Tamil scholar and first
professor of the Annamalai University and University of Ceylon was
greatly involved in the promotion and development of Tamil language,
Religion and cultural activities like Music and Dance.
Great Kings like Chera, Chola, Pandiya established sangams to spread
the greatness of "Thirukural" which contains 1330 couplets. The richness
of poet Thiruvalluvar's imagination, his profound knowledge, human
nature and his delicate description of its most tender emotions are of
high quality.
Even Swami Vivekananda and first Governor General of India Sri
Rajagopalachariar eloquently spoke on the greatness of Tamil language
and Tamil literature.
Undoubtedly Sri La Sri Arumuga Navalar, who was a Tamil scholar,
social and religious reformer was the first Tamil patriot who exhorted
the people to feel proud and become worthy of their faith and Language
and the deep culture embodied in them.
Even people like Ven. Anagarika Dharmapala and Ven. Gunananda Thera
defended the values and virtues of their faith and opened the eyes of
the people to the heritage that had been passed down to them by their
forebearers.
Indeed, Sri La Sri Arumuga Navalar however achieved his objective
through the transformation of the pamphlets and the Books he published.
Blessed with a dialectical skill, and a sharp logician mind, an
oratorical ebullience combined with fearless and courageous mind he was
able to accomplish and achieve his objectives and built round him a
massive following who subscribed to the principles he extolled.
Anyone who came within his magic appeal imbibed his crusading spirit
and was moved by his lofty integrity and intense language and religious
zeal.
The great poet Bharathydhasan once said that Tamil language and
literature are like nectar. It is very often said that "had not Sri La
Sri Arumuga Navalar of Nallainagar been born, could you have had the
language of Tamil with all its sweetness, melodies of its countless
verses, the boundless knowledge, the wisdom of the ages." ?
Undoubtedly people like Sri La Sri Arumuganavalar, Swamy Vipulananda,
Sir Ponnampalam Ramanathan, Sir Ponnampalam Arunachalam and Sir
Waithilingam Duraiswamy have not only done tremendous service for the
promotion, propagation and development of Tamil literature and Language,
but they preached and practiced noble ideas and noble action and avoided
convoluted thinking and contorted behaviour and rose above narrow
parochialism, regionalism, sectarianism and communalism.
Indeed, this conference on "Sangam literature and society" will
definitely help to bring about national integration and inter-communal
understanding among communities particularly in a multi-racial,
multi-religious and multi-cultural society.
