Teacher nabbed while taking bribe

PERADENIYA: A teacher attached to the Sarasavi Uyana Maha
Vidyalaya, Peradeniya was arrested yesterday by the investigation
officers of the Bribery Commission while she was accepting Rs.35,000
from a parent to facilitate the admission of a student to grade one.
Director Investigation of the Bribery Commission, SSP Neville Guruge
told the Daily News yesterday that the teacher had initially solicited
Rs.45,000 from the parents if their child was to be admitted to the
school.
According to SSP Guruge, the female teacher had also been a member of
the interview board of the grade one admission.
"The parents had sought her assistance to get their child admitted to
the school as their child had not been selected by the interview board
despite fulfilling all requirements", SSP Guruge added.
The parents had lodged a formal complaint at the Bribery Commission
after the teacher solicited Rs.45,000 from them to facilitate the
admission of their child to the school. "Our investigation officers
arrested the teacher as she was accepting the money from the parents at
the school gate on Tuesday morning", he added.
The teacher was due to be produced before Kandy Magistrate yesterday
afternoon. SSP Guruge said the Bribery Commission is prepared to
investigate into such complaints and arrest such officials seeking
bribes to facilitate grade one admissions.He said the parents can inform
