Mathura Lavaniya:

A memorable evening

DANCE: Vimalothaya Classical Bharatha Natya Kendra celebrated its 15th anniversary in the name of Mathura Lavaniya at the New Kathiresan Hall, Colombo recently. To mark this memorable occasion, Vimalothaya Classical Bharatha Natya Kendra also published a book 'Payankalai Bharatha Kalai,' written by Subashini Pathmanathan.

Vimalothaya Classical Bharatha Natya Kendra was established in 1991 by Subashini Pathmanathan, an outstanding Sri Lankan born exponent of classical Bharatha Natyam, and well known writer, research scholar in cultural art forms and an effective speaker.

GROUP: Students presenting a dance item.

The chief guest at the programme was Prof.Smt. Gnana Kulendran, formerly Head of the Music and Advanced Bharatha Natyam Faculty, of Thanjavur Tamil University Thanjavur Tamil Nadu. The guests of honour were Kalasuri Smt. Arunthathy Sri Ranganathan, a well known artist, and an outstanding person in the cultural circle and Smt. Rohini Alles, Managing Director Gateway International College, Colombo.

Mathura Lavaniya started with the launch of Payn Kalai Bharatha Kalai. It was followed by a classical Bharatha Natya recital, Pushpanjali, a floral tribute to Lord Ganesha, Venba, Alaripu, two Sabthams by two different groups of students. One was the composition of Tanjore Quartet, and the other was the composition of Subashini's Guru Padmashri Vazhuvoor Ramiahpillai, both the Sabthams were on Lord Krishna.

More than 25 students participated in the programme. Each student was perfect in Nirtha, and Nirthiya. A few students performed individually. Altogether three different groups participated, yet each student showed perfection in the execution of Nirtha, and Nirthiya.

They revealed the Bhava and Rasas, very gracefully in typical Vazhuvoor style. That shows that how much time and effort the teacher has spent with each student to bring out the emotional inner feeling of the students to portray the different emotional Rasas.

Most of the non-Tamil speaking students danced for the Tamil devotional songs with appropriate expression, deep dedication, devotion and involvement was really a thrilling experience for the audience. Each student and each group was given equal opportunity to display their skills.

The selection of songs for the programme is praiseworthy, and majority of the classical songs are hardly heard in the present stages. Such as 'Aadum Theivam' Arulvai in Kambothi Raga, Arupadai Vedu about the six abodes of Lord Muruga in Ragamaliga, and set to Aathi Thala,

Thasaavatharam refers to Lord Vishnu's ten incarnations. Epadi Padinaroo in Karanadaka Theva Kanthari, and Periyalwar Paassuram 'Katpooram Narumoo' in Kamas Raga, and Meenakshi Thaye in the Raga Sri Ranjani were some of the exceptional songs of the concert. Two beautiful folk songs by Annamali Reddiyar were presented. Both the songs were very rhythmic and gracefully executed by one individual dancer.

The crowning piece of the recital was the Varnam, in Thanyasi Raga set to Aathi Thala performed by Subashini Pathmanathan. It is a composition of Papanasasivam. It was an excellent performance. It proved Subashini's full longstanding experience in the dance field. It was in her own Sollukattu Nattuwangam. The Varnam took the audience to an ancient dance dream world.

Further she danced two philosophical Keerthanams on Lord Siva, and one Patham 'Sinthai Arinthu Vadi' which revealed and portrayed the beautiful Navarasas and appropriate Bhavas.

All these showed her longstanding and outstanding experience in the field of dancing.

The memorable evening concluded with two different melodious brisk Thillanas in two different Ragas.

All these proved the phenomenal growth of the Vimalothaya Classical Bharatha Natya Kendra and its 15 years of establishment in the capital city. Subashini's total dedication enriched her knowledge in the art.

Now Vimalothaya is affiliated to Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts Tiruchirappalli, in Collaboration with Bharathidasan University. It provides an opportunity for the Sri Lankans to pursue Diploma, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Bharatha Natyam, (B.F.A.) and Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A) in Bharatha Natyam through Vimalothaya Classical Bharatha Natya Kendra.
