COLOMBO: The 51st General Convention of United National Party (UNP)
was held at the grounds of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) without
the presence of its senior leaders including party Deputy Leader Karu
Jayasuriya and S.B. Dissanayake.
Addressing the gathering, Opposition and UNP Leader Ranil
Wickremesinghe said there will be no room for internal and external
elements to destroy the party.
"Let us make the UNP the party of the majority people of Sri Lanka
with the new amendments to the UNP constitution," Wickremesinghe said.
The proposals also basically focused on those who were suffering from
the political victimisation at the their workplaces and in their
business activities, said the Opposition Leader.
He also elaborated on the MoU signed between the SLFP and the UNP.
The four elementary facts related to the consensus were the
North-East conflict, electoral reforms, good governance and social
development, he added.
Thilak Karunaratne, Tissa Attanayake and Rukman Senanayake have been
appointed unanimously as Treasurer, General Secretary and Chairman of
the UNP respectively.
