Rains cause havoc in low lying areas

KOLONNAWA: Due to incessant rains that lashed many parts of the island throughout Saturday night about 1500 houses in the low lying areas in the Kolonnawa Pradeshiya Sabha went under water displacing more than 5000 persons.

Sinhapura, Megoda Kolonnawa, Gamagewatta, Orugodawatta, Wadullawatta, Brandiyawatta, Veheragodella, Kotuwila, Wennawatta, Sedawatta were among the areas innundated due to rains. The Megoda Kolonnawa area was the worst affected.

Some of the victims found refuge in lands of higher elevation. About 60 families have taken temporary shelter in Vidyawardhena Vidyalaya, Wellampitiya.

Sumedharamaya, Kotuwila, Jumma Mosque, Gothatuwa, Paramadhamma Viharaya, Wellampitiya and Purana Viharaya, Kalavita Godella are the other places of shelter for the displaced persons, according to Wellampitiya Police.
