Indian expertise to boost handloom industry

COLOMBO: Textile Industry Development Ministry has decided to utilise the expertise of Indian textile masters with the objective of promoting high quality and demandable handloom textile products manufacturing in Sri Lanka.

Under this programme, an intensive training for local handloom weavers will be provided by them. Textile Industry Development Minister Jayatissa Ranaweera told the Daily News that this project's major aim is to educate handloom weavers on manufacturing fashionable products to capture the international buyers.

"This step would vastly boost the local handloom textile sector, "Minister said. The project implements with the assistance of the Textile Department and the Export Development Board under the funding of Common Wealth.

This is the residential training and 30 selected handloom weavers in provincial levels attached to the Textile Department and in the private sector have already started their training in the Handloom Designing and Training Center in Katubedda.

He said that the training comprising latest technology and modern designs has targeted the manufacturing of handloom textile for the suitable of export market.
