GOLF: The prestigious Royal Colombo Golf Club's annual championship
played over two weekends in inclement weather that wasn't quite
conducive for good golf - climaxed yesterday at the RCGC on a triumphant
note for Mithum Perera, who stamped his class in no uncertain terms in
the final to a convincing win over yet another reputed golfer in Rusi
Captain 7/5 over 18 holes.
Having won their preliminary round matches, Mithum and Rusi moved
over to the semi-finals, where Mithum beat Binupa Wijesinghe 3/2 and
Rusi Captain beat Stewart Ritchie 4/3. In the ensuing final Mithum took
an early lead to be 2 up on the second but bogeyed the third to be just
1 up.
Both Rusi and Mithum were all square on the 4th and 5th. But with 2
birdies for Mithum in the 6th and 7th saw Mithum go 3 up.
Both of them were all square on the 8th and 9th. Mithum now playing
well birdied the 10th and 11th to go 5 up. Rusi had a bad shot on the
12th to concede the hole for Mithum to go 6 up.
Rusi bogeyed the 13 for Mithum to be 7 up and win the RCGC's golf
title 7/5. This coveted golf championship concluded with the awards
ceremony and a dinner.
