Public support vital to ensure security - IGP
COLOMBO: Public support is vital to provide national security
and the public played a vital role in assisting the Security Forces to
enforce law and order in the country, IGP Victor Perera said yesterday.
Addressing a ceremony held at Police Headquarters to reward the
civilians who informed about the claymore mines in Wellawatte and
Kadawata, IGP Perera said their assistance should be appreciated and
The public are vigilant and have an important role to perform in
providing security to the country, Perera said.
"Two major tragedies were averted in Wellawatta and Kadawatha by some
vigilant civilians. These acts should be rewarded to show their effort
to the world."
He said that the public support is essential in the fight against
terrorism. When the public are conscious and vigilant the terrorists
will fail in their attempts.
Nanayakkara Namal who identified the claymore mine in Wellawatta
close to the railway station on October 4 and informed the police was
rewarded with Rs.100,000. Police Constable Sunil who acted fast to
provide security was also rewarded with a promotion.
A private company's garbage cleaner M.A.M. Jaseen who identified the
claymore mine in Kadawatha, on October 19 and informed police was
rewarded with Rs.150,000.
