Forces strengthened to protect Motherland - President

COLOMBO: President Mahinda Rajapaksa asserted that the Government was
strengthening the Security Forces not with intention of waging war, but
with the objective of defeating terrorism and protecting the Motherland.
President Rajapaksa made this observation when he addressed the Sri
Lanka Army's Singha Regiment 50th anniversary on Tuesday in Colombo.
"The country's Army could be considered its heart. A stronger heart
would render a strong country, and would enhance the living standards of
its people. Thus the seven per cent growth now achieved, could be
further accelerated," he noted.
President Rajapaksa observed that the country's security encompasses
not only its territorial integrity but also the protection of its
national identity, inclusive of patriotism and loyalty, which are more
important qualities for an Army, than just its strength.
He stressed that collective responsibility, team work and mutual
understanding were essential qualities for all soldiers.
"It is only then that we would be able to face the challenges before
us. We are protected so long as we are united. I hope you all will get
together and strengthen our security, based on the slogan, 'unity is
power'."
The President noted that the country is at a crucial juncture. "We
have to decide whether to steer the country to destruction or move
forward to prosperity by developing a strong culture based on an
enlightened democracy and the contribution of the army, police, other
government officials and public blessings."
He added that the Singha Regiment had rendered a yeoman service in
protecting the Motherland. |
