Heavy fine for attacking uncle with knife

COLOMBO: A man who attacked his uncle with a Manna knife was ordered
to pay Rs. 100,000 as compensation by the Colombo High Court Judge
Deepali Wijesundara. Court also sentenced S. Y. Prasanna Perera to one
year's rigorous imprisonment suspended for five years.
The High Court Judge issued the judgement after Prasanna pleaded
guilty to causing injuries to S. Y. Karunapala at Manning Market on July
1, 2003 with a Manna knife.
S.Y. Dayaratne Perera in a statement said, Prasanna was his son from
his first marriage. Dayaratne was managing a business with Prasanna at
Manning Market. Dayaratne's brother later joined them. Karunapala also
joined later.
During an argument, Prasanna had injured his uncle with a knife. The
victim was rushed to the Colombo National Hospital.
The Court also imposed a Rs. 100,000 fine and six months'
imprisonment in default. State Counsel Rajinda de Jayaratne appeared for
the prosecution. |
