COLOMBO: President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday instructed the
Shipping and Aviation Ministry to expand its operations for the
country's rapid development as envisioned in the 'Mahinda Chintanaya'.
At a meeting to assess the progress of the Shipping and Aviation
Ministry at Temple Trees yesterday, President Rajapaksa directed
Ministry officials to purchase new vessels for the Shipping Corporation.
The President expressed the view that the purchase of new vessels
would contribute to the easy transport of essential items to the
North-East.
Attention had been drawn to the process of registering foreign
vessels under the Sri Lankan flag, which would enhance job opportunities
for around 18,000 Sri Lankan seafarers who contribute around US$ 80
million in foreign exchange.
It was pointed out that the enhanced provision of shipping services
and banking services would boost the economy.
The need to develop maritime training had also been identified.
President Rajapaksa also directed officials to commence the construction
of the Hambantota port with Rs. 58 million of Port Authority funds until
such time it attracts foreign funds.
Hambantota port's strategic geographic location and its potential for
tourism have been identified. Plans have been drawn up with special
emphasis on its rapid implementation.
It was also revealed at the meeting that the Galle Harbour
Development Project would be completed during the next four years.
They also discussed the progress made in the aviation sphere, with

terminals at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake. Work on
the proposed Weerawila second international airport will commence on
