POWERFUL DANCE POSE: Subashini Pathmanathan

Subashini Pathmanathan started her dancing career at the age of two and a half, under Srimathy Thirupurasundari Yoganantham and later she studied Bharatha Natyam under the world renowned Bharatha Natya Guru the late Padmashree Vazhuvoor Ramiahpillai of Mylapore, Chennai.

Vazhuvoor style in classical Bharatha Natyam is an outstanding style. It is still preserved by the Gurukula Param Para (generation). It has not moved to the institutions.

It is a very graceful Bharatha Natya style. Only a very few are privileged to study in this tradition. It gives more scope to Nirthiya (Expressions, Bhava and Rasas and Grace) which are often absent in present stages.

Subashini followed her academic career at the Punjab University, Chandigarh where she graduated and did her post grauation.

During her long stay in India she gave numerous classical benefit shows for different organisations and also she visited numerous foreign countries for various classical Bharatha Natya performances.

In 1989, she gave a benefit show for the Jaffna University Vice Chancellor's fund as well as in 1977 she gave a benefit programme to build up a Cancer Institute in Jaffna, under the patronage of Lion's Club of Jaffna.

In 1991 she started her dance institute in Colombo, named Vimalothaya Classical Bharatha Natya Kendra. This institution was started with one student; within the fifteen years span it has seen phenomenal growth.

Subashini Pathmanathan is a well-known writer in English and Tamil. She has written for several local and foreign journals about dance and related topics. In 1991 she won the Esmond Wickramasinghe Award for her exceptional talent in writing. She has written several books.

Vimalothaya Classical Bharatha Natya Kendra has published some of her books. Now Vimalothaya Kendra is affiliated to the Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts, Thiruchirapalli, India, in collaboration with Bharathidasan University Thiruchirapalli.

It provides an opportunity for the Sri Lankan students to pursue Diploma in Bharatha Natyam, post grauation (M.F.A.), Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Bharatha Natyam.

Subashini Pathmanathan has been teaching Bharatha Natyam at the Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo, since its inception in 1998 and also she is a part-time dance teacher at the Gateway International College.

Hundereds of Tamil and Non-Tamil speaking students are studying under her. The students are from Galle, Matara and from far away places who come to Colombo to learn Bharatha Natyam under her.
