Lucky's reel life enters new phase
Anushka Nanayakkara
ACTING: A man with fame yet so shy. A man who holds two
different faces in the circle of life. Lucky Dias was met recently,to
focus and discuss mainly on his passion for acting.
Lucky prefers the simple way of life and his "never say die" spirit
always cropped up to be an 'A' type personality - hyperactive, quick on
the uptake, straight forward and voluble.
Lucky Dias is not an actor to be seen all the time on TV or the
silver screen. Still, even with the few amount of roles he has come up
with, have left cherished memories and have been touched by his magic
spell of extraordinary talent he has in acting.
The best example is from the outstanding role in "Baladewa" in
Yshorawaya to "Jayampathi" of Sanda Sakmana. It was his role in
Yashorawaya that brought him to the limelight.
Music
Lucky never dreamt of becoming an actor. Even at first his passion
was for music. Time flew, without knowing to himself, that itself today
has led him to become an expert in acting.

He said stepping into the industry was mostly out of luck. And what
kept him going was talent, advice which he got from superiors like
Lester James Peries, the late Gamini Fonseka, Joe Abeywickrama and
blessings of his fans.
Since his very first day in the industry, he had been very choosy
about the characters he accepted. Due to that he restricted himself to
take up only one film and one teledrama for a year. Lucky said it was
the risk, challenge and enthusiasm which made him to take up a role.
Although so many years have passed since the role of Baladewa, the
character is still in the hearts of the people. Later on Baladewa became
a trend to the local fans.
This prominent film and teledrama actor gave his comments of what
made him to take up the role in Gauthami. "I was tired playing the same
kind of characters. There were many times the fans have asked me whether
even in real life, that I show my teeth, especially after playing
serious and morose roles most of the time. Then my friend Cyril Fernando
the producer of Gauthami, came up with this character.
The plot interested me. It was a mix with comedy and villainy. Also
it was a whole new experience to work with Indian writers. But after
some time the Indian Directors and writers left. And the local writers
took up Gauthami into a total different direction.
Family story
According to Lucky, Gauthami is not any more a family story. Lucky
said that he already has spoken to the directors and would expect them
to bring back Gauthami into the right track. The only option would be
for him to quit from the role.
Lucky's point of view as regard Sinhala teledrama and cinema is that
the industry is dependent on the creativity and quality. Therefore, the
directors should be aware of it and produce films and teledramas which
suit the Sri Lankan audience.
Lucky Dias, an actor who has been successful for more than two
decades, believes more in the true warmth of his fans, than any other
award. He also added that without their encouragement, he would not have
succeeded as an actor. |
