Joes upset defending champs Christ Church

Hockey: St. Joseph's College, Colombo put up a good performance to defeat defending champions Christ Church College, Matale 2 goals to nil to qualify for the quarter final on the second day of the under 15 All Island Schools Hockey championship conducted by the Schools Hockey Association and Matale Hockey Committee, at Bernard Aluvihare Stadium, Matale yesterday.

Before beating Christ Church, St. Joseph's drew with Sri Sumangala College, Kandy when both teams failed to score. In the first match of the day two Christ Church scored seven goals to beat debutant Anuradhapura Central College (7-0).

In the second match Royal College stickers came up with a another good performance to overcome Anuradhapura Central 8 goals to nil. Trinity had the better of Maris Stella College, Negombo 1-0. In the next match St.Aloysius College, Galle beat Trinity College 1-0. The match between Royal College and Christ Church College ended in a goalless draw.

In a another second round match St.Aloysius College scored two goals to register their victory over Maris Stella College, the scores stood at 2-0 at close in favour of winners. Mahinda College made their first win in the second round defeating Kalutara MV by 3 to nil.

In the decisive encounter between Royal College and Sri Sumangala College, Royal recorded a closely contested 2 goals to 1 victory to qualify for the quarter finals. The match between St. Sylvester's College and Maris Stella College ended in a draw. Scores stood level at two-all. Ananda College beat Trinity College 4-0 to reach quarter final. Dharmaraja College, Kandy who emerged runner-up last year went down to Vijaya College, Matale 1-0.

In another close contest Ananda College had the better of St. Sylvester's College three goals to one to qualify for next round while Kingswood College drew with St. Thomas College, Matale where both teams scored one goal each.

In the girls second round match St. Anthonys Convent, Katugastota overcame Sangamitha Balika Vidayalaya 1-0 to qualify for the quarter finals. In the next match between Pushpadana Girls' College, Kandy and Sangamitta College, Galle ended with former winning convincingly 2 goals to nil.

Defending champions Seethadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy had a close contest with Vijaya College, Matale. The former had a two goals to 1 victory which enabled them to enter the next round. Yasodara Balika Vidyalaya, Gampaha beat Christ Church College 2-0. In the next match Yasodara Girls overcame Girls' High School, Kandy 3-0.

In another second round match Christ Church College trounced Sangamitta College, Galle 1-0. Musaeus College beat Gothami Girls' College, Kandy 2-0. Musaeus College won their second match against Girls' High School, Kandy 3-1. The match between Christ Church College and Gothami College, Kandy ended in a draw (0-0).

The quarter final matches will be played today commencing at 7.30 a.m. and the semi finals are scheduled to commence at 10.30 a.m at the Bernard Aluvihara Stadium while the finals will be played at Nandamithra Ekanayake Hockey Stadium commencing at 3.00 p.m. onwards said Anuruddha Herath Bandara Secretary, Schools Hockey Association of Sri Lanka.

The quarter-final line up is as follows:

Boys: Vijaya College vs Kingswood College, Ananda College vs St.Joseph's College, Mahinda College vs Nalanda College, Royal College vs St.Sylvester's College.

Girls: Seethadevi Balika Vidyalaya vs Christ Church College, Yasodara Balika Vidyalaya vs St.Anthony's Convent, Vijaya Girls vs Pushpadana College, Vishaka College vs Musaeus College.
