Walter Dayaratna, Anuradhapura special corr
ANURADHAPURA: When crimes like sexual exploitation were being
committed unabatedly, it is unfortunate that children's statute was not
implemented fully to serve its intended purpose, said North Central
Province Governor, Dr. Jagath Balasooriya. He was speaking at a meeting
at the Anuradhapura CTC auditorium to mark the universal Children's Day.
The meeting was organised by the District Coordinating officer of the
National Children's Insurance Authority, Mahendra Dassanayake under the
instructions of the Anuradhapura District Secretary, U.D. Yapa. The
theme of the discussion was "Mal Kekuluwalata Pibidenna Ida Denna"
(allow flower buds to bloom).
Dr. Balasooriya said: "Authors like Alexender Herson has said that
the child is the origin of a family. Children's powers have also been
graphically analyzed by them. The world without children will be a
lonely place.
"First seat of education of a child is his home, the parents being
his first teachers. The prime responsibility of a child's future lies
with his parents.
"present day child has to face many problems. Physical, mental and
sexual problems are among them. Terrorism has affected children very
badly. Parents going overseas leaving their children some where has
created immense problems for such children. Conscription of children is
another scourge. It is our duty to rescue our child-generation from all
these destructive forces.
NCP, Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayaka said the time has come
to show the children the right path they should proceed and as elders it
is better for us to set an example for them than advise and admonish
them.
The welcome speech was delivered by the District Coordinating officer
of the National Children's Insurance Authority Mahendra Dassanayaka.
Chief Secretary J.A.M. Karunaratna, District Secretary U.D. Yapa and
Director of childcare and probation Wasanthi Ratnapala were present. |
