Proposal to widen tax net

TAX: Taxpayers have proposed to the Government to widen the tax net and attract more taxpayers through the next Budget, Finance Ministry sources said.

The Government will focus on developing a friendly approach to the country's taxpayers. this years budget will also focus on protecting taxpayers' rights and granting substantial recognition to them. Taxpayers have also made proposals for tax concessions through the coming budget.

The Finance Ministry has discussed with many stakeholders of the different industries to gain their views for the next budget and Ministry also met Pettah traders recently.

The Pettah traders pledged to pay taxes to the Government. But they said that they are not aware of the tax systems and urged the relevant authorities to educate them on taxation, the source said.
